Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah and the Bee is an inspiring movie about 11 year-old Akeelah Anderson's desire to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Akeelah doesn't like attending Crenshaw Middle School; her mother is busy 24/7 working at the hospital; and her brother is hanging out with rappers in South Central L.A. Akeelah's English teacher notices she has a talent for spelling, and, with the principal's help, they convince her to try out for the district spelling bee. But, Akeelah needs support and tutoring to get to the nationals. This is a story about perservance, diversity, family, love and community. I highly recommend it for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students.
