Are You Ready For Some Football?

Football season is in full swing, so here are a few recent football related books for your reading consideration.

For you Pro Football fans try:

  • T.O. by Terrell Owens. I don't need to say much about T.O., love him or hate him, here is the book in which he gives his side of the story.
  • Johnny U: The Life and Times of John Unitas by Tom Callahan A brand new biography on the man who redefined the quarterback position and still may be the greatest of them all!
  • The draft : a year inside the NFL's search for talent by Pete Williams. The Draft follows a handful of NFL hopefuls through the ups and downs of the 2004 college football season and the predraft process, culminating with the 2005 draft.
  • The blind side : evolution of a game by Michael Lewis. Best-selling author Lewis (Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game) shows how changes in the pro game wrought by 49ers head coach Bill Walsh's efficient passing attack and a defense emphasizing Lawrence Taylor style speed rushers from the quarterback's blind side mean that the offensive left tackle position now rivals the quarterback both in importance and in pay scale. Lewis's discussion of evolving strategy is woven into the true focus of his book, a profile of African American football prodigy Michael Oher. One of 13 children of a drug-addicted mother, Oher was homeless in Memphis when he was placed in the Briarcrest Christian School and then adopted by a wealthy white family. He found a sense of belonging and a future. He is now the massive left tackle for the University of Mississippi. His strange, sad, and yet inspiring tale is grippingly told here.

And College Football fans may enjoy:

  • Stadium stories : USC Trojans by Jim Gigliotti This book chronicles many of the dramatic moments and colorful characters in one of college football's most storied programs.

[Go Trojans!!!]

  • Stadium stories : UCLA Bruins by Chris Roberts Join Chris Roberts, the voice of the Bruins, as he recounts the highlights of this great team.
  • The last coach : a life of Paul "Bear" Bryant by Allen Barra This meticulous, fascinating look at the life of the legendary "Bear" Bryant (1913 1983), longtime head football coach of the University of Alabama's fearsome "Crimson Tide," will further enhance the reputation of Barra (Clearing the Bases) as one of America's finest sportswriters.
