Friendship Force International

A patron named Sofie came in this week hoping to generate interest in a wonderful nonprofit group she belongs to called Friendship Force International. Its mission is to promote world peace and understanding with the idea that each person can make a contribution to global goodwill. It is active in more than 60 countries, promoting friendship through homestay exchanges. "Home hospitality" provides the opportunity for people of different countries and cultures to connect at a personal level.

A 1992 nominee for The Nobel Peace Prize, Friendship Force International organizes the travel of goodwill ambassadors who share the lives of a host family in another country for one or two weeks. Since the program began in 1977, nearly half-million volunteer ambassadors and hosts have participated.

Sofie has been all over the world and still hears from friends she's met in Russia, Japan and South America. She says it's an inexpensive way to travel and make a difference in the world at the same time.
