Read It Before You See It

The holiday season is fast approaching and the silver screen beckons. There's still time to read these wonderful books before buying tickets for the upcoming movie adaptations!

October 20: Be first in line to see Running with Scissors, based on the bestselling memoir by Augusten Burroughs. I've seen a trailer of this film and it looks hilarious.

November 17: Get your stomach in the mood for food (or not) with Fast Food Nation, written by Eric Schlosser. That homecooked meal on Thanksgiving Day will sound even better.

December 15: Will the fantasy epic Eragon, written by Christopher Paolini, make a successful jump to celluloid like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter? Who knows? But there will be dragons - oh yes. There will be dragons.

December 29: Ring in the new year with two adaptations.

The first is Children of Men by P.D. James. It is a dark tale that takes place in a future with no future, where humankind can no longer produce children. I am especially excited about this one after seeing the panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con. Gifted director Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Y Tu Mamá También) will bring the words to life.

Second, we have the disturbing Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind. This one sounds creepy, but it also has my boyfriend Alan Rickman in it.*

* I am happily married to a man other than Alan Rickman. I have never met Alan Rickman. Please don't sue.
