For Your Consideration

For your consideration: Go see For Your Consideration in theaters nationally on November 22.

You have no idea the extent of my joy - I've been waiting for the next Christopher Guest movie since his last, A Mighty Wind, was released in 2003. His films usually have more or less the same cast and are largely improvised. They are widely considered to follow a "mockumentary" style, but they are less mocking and more heart-warming and funny. In my personal favorite, Waiting for Guffman, the small town of Blaine, Missouri, puts on a pageant to celebrate its 150th anniversary. Though amateur and off-key, the actors are blissfully unaware and they anticipate a chance to take their production to Broadway. In Best in Show, the camera follows canine contestants and their determined owners as they prepare for the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. The most recent, A Mighty Wind, sees the reunion of some spectacularly colorful characters who put on a folk concert to honor their deceased producer.

Any of these movies would be excellent choices to introduce you to the cast. In the new film, For Your Consideration, actors react as their film, Home for Purim, begins to receive some surprising Oscar buzz. Fans of the British version of the television comedy The Office will welcome a cameo by Ricky Gervais. As always, click on the links to see if the DVDs are available in our library.

I'm definitely excited about For Your Consideration too, but I'm not sure it will hit my little corner of the world until its out on DVD ... I have to agree that Waiting for Guffman is his best movie, though I definitely have a soft spot for Best in Show too
