What We're Reading: The Areas of My Expertise

I'm surprised it took me this long to pick up this hilarious volume that promises complete world knowledge, even though the facts are entirely made up. The author, John Hodgman, is perhaps better known as occasional "resident expert" on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He also plays the part of the PC in the Apple commercials. His first book, The Areas of My Expertise, has all the random information and advice you might find in a traditional farmer's almanac. It simply takes it to a new and more quirky level.

Are you the type of person who would be amused by this book? It helps to be someone who is either nerdy or interested in the concept of fake trivia, but take this quiz to find out for sure!

1. You delight when viewing a photograph of a sea otter with caption "Figure 11: The Lobster".

2. You wish to consult the Lycanthropic Transformation Timetable to determine whether the "taming love of a pure woman" will be an effective charm against a werewolf.

3. You will patiently read through 700 hobo names to find gems like "Boxcar Aldous Huxley", "Commodore Sixty-Four" and "Low-Carb Aleks Stovepipe". (If you'd like to put a face to the names, click through the artwork of some talented fans.)

4. You'd like to know how to use a ferret to con people into giving you money.

5. You want to know about the real history of California, when bears briefly ruled over "The Bear Flag Republic".

If you answered "yes" to all these questions, or even a confused "what?", then check this book out from our library. You won't be sorry.
