Free Credit Report

Do you know what's on your credit report? You can find out for free. Every 12 months you are encouraged to request your report from the three consumer reporting companies. For more information, please see the Federal Trade Commission website. You can order your report by phone, mail, or online. Just a word of caution about using the Internet - there is only one official way to access your report online, and that is to go through www.annualcreditreport.com/. You can visit the site directly, or you can click on the link from the FTC site. You will not be asked for your credit card information before being directed to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. If this occurs, something is amiss and you are likely not using the authorized site.

It's good to make sure that there are no discrepancies between the reports - before requesting my credit reports, I was unaware that one agency considered my maiden name to be more current than my married! Beyond personal information, you should naturally check to see that all your open accounts are in good standing.
