What We're Reading - 1001 People Who Made America

Currently, I am randomly dipping into 1001 People Who Made America by Alan Axelrod, which is one man's "who's who of the personalities, past and present who have made America what it is today." As with any book of this type, listing the greatest or best or [whatever] it is always full of head scratchers both in admission or omission, why this person and not that person. A great deal of fun to read. Sure to cause discussion of who is worthy, which is always a good thing and always the best thing about suck books.

Below are some pairs of famous people in American History, one is listed in this book, the other is not, go ahead, post your choices on who made the cut and is in the book and I'll post back in a few days the answers.

Madonna or Barbra Streisand [The Material Girl vs Funny Girl]

Jimi Hendrix or Michael Jackson [Purple Haze vs. Thriller which one struck the right note?]

Charles Schulz or Norman Rockwell [Snoopy vs Saturday Evening Post art...is it a draw?]

Harper Lee or Margaret Mitchell [Pulitzer Prize winning, one book authors square off as it is Atticus Finch vs. Rhett Butler]

Ray Bradbury or Isaac Asimov [a matchup of two titans of fantasy writing]

Willie Mays or Hank Aaron [this baseball argument goes back to their playing days in the 50's and 60's]

Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly [who will you dance with?]

Barbara Walters or Johnny Carson [who wins your TV rating?]

Ann Landers or Abigail Van Buren [Dear Abby] [a battle of sisterly advice columns]

Jack Nicklaus or Bobby Jones [who is the greatest golfer ... sorry Tiger not yet]

Hugh Hefner or Betty Friedan [a battle of the sexes for the ages]
