Best of 2007: A Thousand Splendid Suns

It's the end of the year, and it's time to reflect on the best books of 2007. Several of our staff members have made their selections - feel free to tell us your favorite book published in 2007 by clicking on the comments link below. Read on for Nancy's first choice.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

This is a beautifully written book about life in Afghanistan, from the Soviet invasion to the post-Taliban era. It is also a story detailing the lives of Afghan women and their rights. Hosseini is a master storyteller who sensitively describes the characters’ lives and his beloved Afghanistan. (The author was born in Kabul). He has a writing style that makes it easy to read even when he presents disturbing, confrontational issues between men and women, and, religion and women. If you read one book in during the year, make it this one!
