What We're Reading: Born Standing Up

Two simple words. Two simple words in the English language: "I forgot!"

What does a woman usually say she wants in a man? Sense of humor, of course. While my husband certainly solicits chuckles of his own, he's had lots of help in the form of stand-up albums shared on long road trips. That is why I must recommend Steve Martin's new autobiography, Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life. In it, he discusses his rise to fame as a stand-up comedian and his ultimate decision to abandon the stage. It's a svelte volume that is a quick but entertaining read. You may be disappointed if you're looking for the ramblings of a "wild and crazy guy", however. He does write out some early jokes in the second half of the book, but the majority of the work focuses on the process. It's nice to get to know the real man behind the zany one...even if the zany one has fantastic advice about how to be a millionaire and never pay taxes. (See above)

(Mr. Martin, I wish I could have seen you live on stage, but if you could write another novel like Shopgirl, all will be forgiven. Oh, and thank you for The Jerk, with such classic lines as "He hates these cans!")
