What We're Listening to - "Heartsick" by Chelsea Cain.

I recently had the occasion to do some distance driving, which means a rare opportunity for me to listen to an audio book. This time, I finally caught up with a debut mystery book that had been on my "To Read" list, Heartsick by Chelsea Cain. Mystery fans looking for more genteel fare or a cozy should definitely stay away from this story. Heartsick features an entwined pair of characters that are memorably drawn in serial killer Gretchen Lowell [200+ kills in her career] and Police detective Archie Sheridan returning to the force after a two year medical absence. I won't say why these two are entwined together but oh boy it is one twisted relationship! This certainly has to be one of the top first time mysteries published in 2007, tough gritty storytelling, and a wonderfully detailed Portland, Oregon setting all contribute to what looks to be a new series. What Ms. Cain is going to do for a follow-up and how she'll keep these two compelling characters entwined together is beyond me, but if you like serial killer fiction and are not bothered by gruesome descriptions [can you handle Cornwell or Reichs?] then this is a story to be read or listened to and definitely not one to be missed.

You will be heartsick if you miss "Heartsick".
