Best Books of 2008: The Lump of Coal

It's that time of year again, and your friendly neighborhood librarians are eager to tell you about the best books of 2008. Here is Cathleen with a review of her favorite picture book.

The Lump of Coal by Lemony Snicket.

“Perhaps miracles are only as genuine as Mr. Wong’s Korean Barbecue Palace and Secretarial School. Perhaps I should just bury myself and become a diamond after thousands of years of intense pressure.”

Lemony Snicket’s Christmas picture book about a lump of coal looking for purpose is quirky and odd and funny. The illustrations by Bret Helquist add appeal for all ages, but the story will be better appreciated by grownups.
