What We're Reading: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski

Edgar Sawtelle is a mute 14 year old boy whose life and the lives of his parents surround raising and training dogs on his family’s farm. Arriving on the scene is his mysterious and unsettling Uncle Claude. Soon enough, his father dies in a strange way, and Edgar is suspicious of Uncle Claude’s actions and his intentions. His confusion and frustration is compounded when his mother takes up with Uncle Claude. Edgar runs away, but must leave his beloved dog Almondine behind. Edgar flees the farm and must forage for himself for many months in the wild. Evocative descriptions of the northern woods and love and understanding of the many special dogs Edgar raises are quite wonderful. However, it’s the evil that has overtaken his family and caused Edgar’s odyssey that will keep you riveted to Edgar’s story.
