Favorite Reads of 2010: Gaslight Mysteries

It's that time of year again--your friendly neighborhood librarians are eager to tell you about their favorite reads of 2010. Here is Naomi A. with a review:

This year, I got involved in reading a series of mysteries set in New York in the late 1800s. It is the Gaslight Mystery series by Victoria Thompson. There is a chronology to them, but each can stand on its own. The books feature a midwife, Sarah Brandt, and a detective, Frank Malloy. It is interesting to me to read how people lived in New York City at that time--especially the poor, with the lack of medical care and the overall corruption in the city. The mysteries are simple but fun to read, and the library has all 12 titles, which are, in order (from 1999 to 2010):

Murder on Astor Place

Murder on St. Mark's Place

Murder on Gramercy Park

Murder on Washington Square

Murder on Mulberry Bend

Murder on Marble Row

Murder on Lenox Hill

Murder in Little Italy

Murder in Chinatown

Murder on Bank Street

Murder on Waverly Place

Murder on Lexington Avenue

If you're looking for a new series, try Victoria Thompson!
