Favorite Reads of 2010: It's Christmas, David!

It's that time of the year again -- your friendly neighborhood librarians are eager to tell you about their favorite reads of 2010. Here is David P. with a review:

Being an actual "David," I've enjoyed David Shannon's delightful series of David books from the moment his Caldecott Honor book No, David! first hit our shelves. Despite my many denials, I conduct a losing argument with staff who maintain that the "David" series is my life story.

It was with great anticipation, therefore, that I picked up a copy of Shannon's newest picture book, It's Christmas, David! I discovered that he's done a terrific job of capturing all of the problems that any active young child faces during the Christmas season. From not opening gifts early to not playing with Christmas trees--and those tempting Christmas ornaments that beg to be run across tables--to the bewildering set of special dining rules never before explained but enforced during family gatherings, and the terribly long wait to visit Santa Claus, David Shannon draws upon his own childhood memories--filtered through his wicked sense of humor and enhanced by his impressive and expressive artwork--to capture the wonders, worries, and anticipation that the Christmas season brings to children and to children at heart! It's Christmas, David! is bound to become a holiday favorite in many households. It certainly was one of my 2010 reading favorites.
