"Outlander" Turns Twenty

One of my all-time favorite books is Diana Gabaldon's Outlander and it's turning twenty this month. A new anniversary edition has just been released.

Have you read this genre-bending treasure? For those of you who somehow missed Outlander the first time around, now is the time to discover the wonderful storytelling of author Diana Gabaldon. At first glance, you may think it's a historical romance set in 18th century Scotland. But then there's this time travel component to the story. Or is it a military history of Scottish clans?

Outlander is all this and more! It's the story of Claire Randall, an army nurse returning to civilian life after the war. On a second honeymoon with her husband in the Scottish highlands, Claire visits a group of standing stones and is whisked from 1945 to 1743 -- right into the middle of a battle. She meets -- and eventually marries-- a bonny Scotsman by the name of Jamie Fraser. And so the adventures begin!

Fans of the Outlander series may be interested to know that a musical version is in the works. You can sample Outlander the Musical at its website, with music by Kevin Walsh and lyrics by Mike Gibb.
