The Best of 2011

One of the many items [old and new] enjoyed and recommended by Burbank Public Library staff during 2011 for your consideration:

Bad Behavior and Architects

Last year’s fascination with Frank Lloyd Wright (out in the stacks, I’d stumbled upon Death in a Prairie House by William Drennan…a well-written account of the ax murders at Taliesen) gave birth to this year’s reading of The Architect of Desire, by Suzannah Lessard. As a great-granddaughter of architect Sanford White, Lessard has an intimate take on White’s work, and also of White’s murder by the husband of his lover, although her family avoided mentioning the sordidness of it all. Lessard’s writing is evocative and thorough as she poetically builds a thing of beauty out of the miseries of several generations of her family. It’s a good read.
