The Best of 2012: Music

Two of the many items [old and new] enjoyed by Burbank Public Library staff during 2012, recommended for your consideration:

Boys and Girlsby Alabama Shakes (in the stacks at CD 7.8544 A3168 ALABA). This young band from north Alabama works in the Memphis-Muscle Shoals style from the 1960s. While they may not be up to the level of the best of Stax Records or the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, it’s a great style of music that hasn’t been heard for a while, and it’s only their first record.

Blak and Bluby Gary Clark Jr. (shelved at CD 7.8543 C5931 CLARK). I’m not crazy about this whole album, which is stylistically all over the map, but the blues stuff (“When My Train Pulls In,” “Numb”) is among the best I have heard in years in this style. Clark, from Austin, brings some personality to his playing and avoids the blues rut.
