The fourth library branch, part three

Continuing with an exploration of our fourth branch...OUR WEBSITE.

Click on "LITERACY" to discover the next "room" in our library. This page is "all in one" (no links), so you can read it for yourself, but here are the notable points:

Did you know that one in five adults in the United States is not able to read this post?

Did you know that Burbank Public Library has had a Literacy Program since 1992?

This program is aimed at adults, 18 or older, who speak and understand English but who read and write at a level below 8th grade. It's a free service that provides a tutor twice a week for six months.

There is also a youth component, for 4th through 12th graders who read below grade level. They, too, can receive tutoring twice a week for six months.

The program is implemented by volunteers trained by our Literacy staff at 15-hour tutor workshops; if you are interested in being a reading tutor, the Literacy Department wants to hear from you!

For all aspects of this program, you may call 818 238-5577 for an appointment.

Finally, every year there is a fund-raiser to help support this important service. This year, it's SPELL-A-BRATION 2013, on Thursday, April 25! Three-person teams from local and national businesses and organizations will compete to be the Spelling Champions of Burbank! The fee to enter a team is $250, and the cost to attend the program is $25 ($30 at the door). It will be a fun evening, with appetizers and desserts and a silent auction; please join us to support literacy in Burbank.

Now you have explored another "room" in Burbank Public Library's fourth branch.

Another of the 100 reasons to visit your (online) library!
