Best of 2013: YA science fiction

One of the many items enjoyed by Burbank Public Library staff during 2013, recommended for your consideration:

Game Changer, by Margaret Peterson Haddix

I had never read a book by this author before, and I found this science fiction book did a good job of holding my interest. At first I didn't realize that I had been taken into an alternate reality, so I was a little confused, but that added to the intrigue. The author asks readers to question what we value: how we honor certain qualities and disregard others. In this particular story, the author turns the highly valued athletic skills of our society upside down by taking the reader into an alternate universe where math and science skills are what make a person popular and admired. A theme of the book is learning to have compassion for our differences.
