Best of 2013: Children's books and art

One of the many items enjoyed by Burbank Public Library staff during 2013, recommended for your consideration:

The Day the Crayons Quit,
by Drew Daywalt,
illustrated by Oliver Jeffers

When Duncan opens his crayon box to begin coloring, he is surprised to find disgruntled letters from his crayons bemoaning their usual coloring jobs. Blue wonders how many oceans he will have to color by himself. Orange and Yellow argue over who is the true color of the sun. And even White feels lonely and invisible on white paper.

This funny and engaging picture book may inspire a more creative coloring future in which elephants may be allowed to be green or dogs may be purple. Oliver Jeffers's illustrations make this story come alive and offer a funny perspective that children will definitely enjoy.
