FLOODPATH:
THE ST. FRANCIS DAM DISASTER
Join us as author and documentary film maker Jon Wilkman discusses the story of the collapse of the St. Francis Dam near Los Angeles on March 12, 1928, an event now largely forgotten. Nearly 12 billion gallons of water rushed to the sea, killing more than 600 people in its path. Wilkman looks at the personalities involved, including the man at the center of events, the storied William Mulholland. He examines the causes of the disaster (which he thinks are a warning for our times, especially in this era of drought, crumbling infrastructure and an impending El Nino) and explains the importance of the disaster in the history of the burgeoning growth of Los Angeles. Wilkman is working on a film of the disaster. The author will give an illustrated talk and sign copies of his newly published book.

There will be proof of attendance slips available for teens who attend for extra credit.
