Best of 2016: Picture book for space explorers

As a library page, I have the good fortune of handling and browsing many children’s books on a regular basis. I initially pay close attention to the artwork, typography, or clever titles, so in a way I tend to judge a book by its cover.

“The dark is for dreams —and morning is
for making them come true.”

— Astronaut Chris Hadfield

In The Darkest Dark, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield shares a story of how his childhood fear of the darkness of his bedroom inspired his dream of becoming an astronaut in the darkest dark of space.

With playful text and illustrations reminiscent of Maurice Sendak, The Darkest Dark vividly captures how a young explorer confronts his fear of shadows in the dark and ultimately sees the beauty of it.

This picture book is perfect for space explorers in preschool to the second grade.
